Soul Musings/Day 28: Living Artistry

collage

Life as a work of art that supports a vision.

What would that look like?

Watching the movie “The Artist” yesterday – the back and white silent film that won so many awards – I was captivated by the use of subtlety and silence.

Without sound and color attention moves to focus on such things as relationship, expressions, movement and the moment.

Everything quiets inside even amidst the action on the screen. Is this not what is called for in creating your life as a work of art.

Letting go of the small boxes of culture and traveling into uncharted “never done it before just like this” territory.

The space that opens embraces you in creative exuberance!

Another Example of Living Artistry – WOW!

Soul Musings is a 31-day practice for the month of December immersed in deep listening to what is emerging and unfolding day by day.  Eight sentences with occasional resources to explore more deeply.

Each post, invited by Soul, allows the words to emerge unscathed from prior planning, editing, or censorship.  Dwelling in uncertainty and dipping a toe into mystery this union of words is an attempt to resonate within an innate way of Being…. returning “home”.

Soul Musings/Day 27: Play Vitality

10846502_834966916560314_2269207103011411818_n

Have you ever noticed people who haven’t lost their delight in pure and simple play?

How old they are seems to recede into the background and who they are in essence strides forward.

That innocent, creative, childlike energy residing in all of us.

Allowing play to emerge cracks open a space of spontaneous open awareness where anything goes…and sometimes does!

A space where the parts we often hide get to, you got it, come out and play!

There is something that happens in this wide open space that leaves us wondering why everything is taken so seriously.

What if play is the catalyst for spiritual awakening….or even wealth.

Would you play more?

Soul Musings/Day 21: Where Is The Focus?

chrisfarmer

We all have physical challenges from time to time, like my recent knee injury. This is part of life and certainly arises out of the uncertainty of it all.

Yet, I was hit by the fact that where we focus is a key to seeing how we view life as a whole. Opportunities and possibilities within the continuum or ultimate continual challenges?

For example I caught myself frustrated with the active things I could not do and forgot to be grateful for the fact that I have legs.

There were actually many things I could have been doing to focus on stability for the knee, yet my thoughts were taken up with the inconvenience and discomfort.

The video below is a reminder that embracing what life brings us is not only more effective, but births our fullest expressions from what can be seen as tragedy.

How we perceive our challenges and where we place our focus makes all the difference.

Soul Musings/Day 8: Promises and Dignity

street post with promises ave and reality way signs

There are actually many parts to a promise though it may seem linear. For today the one aspect that I would like to reflect on is this.

We are human beings that live in an uncertain world with change as the common denominator. That means when we make a promise, or receive a promise from someone, we cannot predict what the future will bring.

In other words, life happens. In the world of human dignity life comes before promises.

Breaking promises” will happen. To treat ourselves and others with dignity as human beings we must remember that we cannot predict the future….and that allowing a space for the action of letting ourselves and others “off the hook” through renegotiation restores dignity.

Soul Musings/Day 4: A Game Changer

soul-voice-sensibilità-bn-404x256There comes a time when we get to a certain point in life and are able to hear that clear voice of our Soul speaking to us……. the deepest, juiciest and fullest part of who we are.

Over time this knowing is uncovered within moments of complete surrender in direct relationship to our constantly uncertain and ever changing life moments….a place we live and take action from as the ego gracefully (or not!) steps aside.

This happens at various stages of our lives and certainly often tends to become more apparent as we age. We see that the continuum of our life – the ups and downs, negative and positive – has brought us to this point that we are breathing in at this particular moment in time.

Without even one moment of it exactly as it was, we would be different.

Yes, indeed this is a “game changer” and can happen anyplace on the continuum….and does. This alchemical union shifts our relationship to everything and everyone and shakes up the container we call Self.

Our expected competencies in some domains unravel, our relationships change, and we realize that there7531276952_b12ed075bb_z is a never ending cycle of learning and expansion from which to draw from….

….a space where possibilities emerge and old ways of being are cast off like a well worn pair of old shoes.

Soul Musings/Day 3: Giving Laughter

black_mom_child_laughing

Laughter is a universal language without words.

Seeking ways to make others laugh or creating opportunities to give laughter.

Taking action to make laughter common place in uncommon places.

We deepen into our humanity.

What is in me that I can give to you?

A change in mind set.

Shifts everything.

Be the punch line.

Improv Life – All Out Play!

monks on a roller coaster

We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”  George Bernard Shaw

I wonder if you have ever heard of the story about the monkey and the river?  I had not,  until reading it last week in a beautiful book called The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo.  The story goes like this:

It is said a great Zen teacher asked an initiate to sit by a stream until he heard all the water had to teach.  After days of bending his mind around the scene, a small monkey happened by, and, in one seeming bound of joy, splashed about in the stream.  The initiate wept and returned to his teacher, who scolded him lovingly, “The monkey heard.  You just listened.”

The initiate was brought to tears because all of his reverence, devotion and meditation had not brought him to the joyous moments of play of the monkey. He never really felt the river and what it had to offer him.  The monkey innately knew about being embodied with the river, instead of sitting to ponder its meaning.  There was no holding back!

I had to ask myself the question, “How much time are you giving to play and uninhibited, sense filled  enjoyment in any particular moment?”  As the monks on the roller coaster (yes, this is one of my favorite pictures of all times) hold their hands up in the air in pure joy and play we feel their moments of exhilaration.  With their mouths wide open I am certain that expressions of many different emotions are coming forth.  It blows any preconceived notions we had about what a monk should be like now doesn’t it?!

people-playingPlay encourages fearlessness – to explore one’s world; to test boundaries and step beyond resistance; to prepare one for the unpredictable; to reward flexibility, creativity, and a willingness to let go into the unknown.  Our strong survival imperative has us most often hanging on and contracting in tight little balls of fear – but play can change that in one instant!

Yesterday, our yoga teacher decided that the entire class would be devoted to play.  Now serious yoga students often get caught up in the asana (the yoga pose) and how well they can do it.  Little do many of those people know that most asana was created out of a sense of curiosity around what the human body can do.  Curiosity leads to play.  Play leads to joy and coming up with something completely and absolutely new!

The last part of our class had us divided into two groups.  Each group would take 3 minutes to move to a certain music chosen by our teacher and the other group would be the audience.  As I watched the first group “performing” it was quite obvious that almost everyone was locked into some semblance of a traditional yoga pose, sometimes attempting to string them together in a flow of sorts.  The difficulty letting go was apparent.

It made me reflect on how tight we hold ourselves in every day life for fear of either “doing it wrong” or “being judged” followed by the inevitable – “I am just not good enough”.  We focus on doing something the way we think it SHOULD look or be done (color within the lines please) instead of doing something out of a sense of playful improvisation finding that completely new possibilities will arise from this place of creation.

The illusion of control is always ever present – do we really ever experience exactly what we thought it would be like?

When it came our groups turn to “perform” I made an instant decision.  I closed my eyes and as the music started it’s funky beat ecstatic-danceI became the music.  Becoming the music meant that my body senses were on high drive. Everything within me let go to create in the moment based on what I was feeling, and driven by my bodies natural rhythms.  What could have been an anxious 3 minutes became outrageous play and a very strong experience  of joy.

As I bowed with hands at my heart along with my group I realized that there was no “wrong way” and the only judgement that would have any negative impact would have been my own.  After class one woman came up to me with a big smile on her face and said, “I enjoyed watching you so much.  You were so free and looked like you were completely enjoying yourself in creating the movements.  I want to be able to do that too.”

If we follow all the rules, we miss all the fun.”  Katherine Hepburn

SO….we always have a choice!  Next time you feel like you need to “get it right” please take a very big inhale and let go into that glorious sense filled body of yours.  It will lead the way – PLAY!!

P.S. A little example of the animal kingdom in full out play….I know that you will smile!!

A Holy Curiosity

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. ~ Albert Einstein ~

Following up on the last post here this quote by Albert Einstein above (as well as the marvelous picture!) takes us into contemplation of the juiciness of curiosity.  Is curiosity not a vehicle for being in the moment?

Our lives often contrive to squish us down into survival mentality, yet what miracles there are all around us to be curious about!  Einstein exemplified what he calls “holy curiosity” and never stopped learning, growing, and sharing his thoughts, reflections and wisdom with the world.

Perhaps you cry out, “there is not time to explore or be curious”.  But what if you took this exact moment and looked around you.  Expanded out of the tight thoughts of the mind, looked with a soft gaze, fell into your next inhale and exhale and became curious about the interconnectedness of yourself with your surroundings.

Curious about the expansiveness of this one very moment and everything that is contained within it.  Allow the questions to arise and let them seduce you into exploring ever more deeply.  Interact with others within this curiosity, not having to be the one to “have the right answer”.  What if there isn’t a “right answer”?

What if the true journey is to arrive and arrive and arrive and arrive…at a new awareness through this holy curiosity and expansion delighting in the mystery of it all.

Since everything is always moving and changing this gives us a virtual playground of curiosity to explore!  It is almost like being on that roller coaster with the monks in the last post or riding the crest of a wave!  Every ride is different…… an unlimited territory to reflect upon and experience.

Are you finding your life dull and repetitive?  Try on just a tad of Einstein’s “holy curiosity”!

The Dance of Light and Dark – Navigating Change

Today Richard and I received an e-mail from one of our community members which very eloquently requested guidance on being present to the vast changes and shifts happening all around and within us.  Our reader writes:

“The reality is, as you are undoubtedly aware, very turbulent and the earth and we are going through a lot of changes. So a grounded consciousness is required to navigate through it. There is a transfer of wealth taking place before our eyes so we may as well be on the receiving end of that too. So what I would like to have is more guidance from your experience. … The integration of spirit and the nuts and bolts are essential to expand the creative mind.”

There is widespread global agreement that we can no longer rely on systems and beliefs that have contributed to the devastation of planet, economics, social justice, and overall well being.  As this community member states “the integration of spirit and the nuts and bolts” is essential to re-balancing what has gone completely out of balance.  This also is about what Richard and I feel are the feminine and masculine energies coming back into alignment with each other on all levels.

I will leave the financial and economic wealth advising to Richard, but here is my contribution to the whole from a feminine perspective.  A day ago I read a story that struck me powerfully as a wake up call to pay attention to life moments and all that happens around us.  This story revolved around relationship, death and choices.  Very simplified this is what is always in front of us.

On a deeply spiritual level this is where our wealth and power to ride the waves of change rests…in the moments and the opportunities to integrate the heart with creative mind, engaging in the building of whole systems and relationships that contribute to the well being of all life. Accepting that death is a part of the living experience so that new life can evolve and awareness can be born.

Is it the smallest of events in our lives and the moment to moment choices we make that have contributed to the larger shifts that are upon us?  The beauty and the darkness dance together asking us to choose in every single moment.  In that very choosing and active engaging we ground ourselves over and over again.

Leon VanderPol writes: “It is all there in black and white, the dance of the light and the dark. While the puppet masters scheme for a world in which power is centralized in the hands of a few, a force of great magnitude shines brightly as it calls out to each and everyone of us to make a choice—to become truly engaged.”

What if the navigation system for this time that we are in is one in which we are absolutely present to the daily events and choices of our individual lives.  From that place we assist each other within relationship to work towards the good of the whole organism which we call Earth…one minute dot in the entire vastness of expanded life outside of our planet.  The wealth we seek is NOW in the choices that we make.

It is important to understand and have a feel for the shifts and transitions that we are in the midst of.  Yet,  if we take our attention off of the opportunities, choices, and decisions that present from moment to moment and become consumed and overwhelmed by the challenges that face each of us and our very existence….. we are lost.

So much is going on in any one moment.  What will we choose to engage with?

“I come to a tree so rich with autumn’s golds and reds it makes for a mild ache.  I lie down under it, close my eyes and let my mind wander.  I think of all that is happening elsewhere, as I lie here.  Nearby I can hear the sounds of a road crew.  Somewhere else monkeys chatter in trees.  A male seahorse becomes pregnant.  A diamond forms, a bee dances out directions, a windshield shatters.  Somewhere a mother spreads p-nut butter for her son’s lunch, a lover sighs, a knitter binds off the edge of a sleeve.  Clouds gather to make rain, corn ripens on the stalk, a cancer cell divides, a little league team scores.  Somewhere blossoms open, a man pushes a knife in deeper, a painter darkens her blue.  A cashier pours new dimes into an outstretched hand, rainbows form and fade, plates in the earth shift and settle.  A woman opens a velvet box, male spiders pluck gently on the females’ webs, falcons fall from the sky.  Abstracts are real and time is a lie, it cannot be measured when one moment can expand to hold everything.  You can want to live and end up choosing death; and you can want to die and end up living.  What keeps us here, really?  A thread that breaks in a breeze.  And yet a thread that cannot be broken. ”

Eizabeth Berg from Never Change, pg 214

The Journey

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice —
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do —
determined to save
the only life you could save.
~ Mary Oliver ~

The intimate connection between ourselves, others and each life form that inhabits this planet, and beyond, has gained more and more recognition.  Our collective memories, both individual and from the past, oftentimes keep us stuck in the shame that Richard spoke of in the last post.  These embodied emotional and physical traumas leak body memories to our consciousness that have us forgetting the very nature of who we are.

In yoga class this morning we were asked to listen to the poem above by Mary Oliver and move from a place of remembering – remembering who we are – without the voices from the past or the ones of the present directing the particular life moment.  Often our eyes were closed as we stepped into the flow of what was unwinding from our core – instead of someone else’s direction.

What is it like to follow that inner knowing, dropping silently inside capturing the whisperings of that inner insistence on the uniqueness of truth, movement, actions, and feelings in any one moment.  What are we afraid of?  Or is it that we can hardly hear the  voice of our own unique being for all the demands and stimulus around us.

Yes, the only life we can save – living as uniquely as possible – is our own.  There are more and more moments these days when I feel the solid strength of what this is like.   One of those places is hanging out on an ecstatic dance floor where the “rule” is to have no self imposed restrictions, but instead to explore, listen and move from that place of complete connection to the greater energy that moves us all.

Old patterns of being and moving melt away as the intention for everyone on the dance floor becomes a moving art piece of breath, movement, contact, exploration, play and absolute love and respect.  For someone that loves dance it is a “home coming” to the deepest parts of who we are.

The film Jane’s Journey, shows us someone who listened to her own unique voice in spite of what others might have wanted for her.  For someone like Jane Goodall it was a simple very deeply felt passion that moved her as a young woman to follow her childhood dreams.  Now at 78 she is still traveling the world speaking her truth and impacting millions of people to care for each other and our planet in the most compassionate, loving and peaceful of ways.

What price is taken when we step away from the journey that is uniquely our own?  We become lost in the thoughts and actions of others and forget that we have come here to create and love as only we can do and be.  Today a young man who had never received flowers from a woman was gifted with a single flower of beauty as he sat at his check out stand at the local organic food store.  This happened because I heard loud and clear the voice that directed me to take this loving action as I left the store the first time I was there. What impact did this have?  Let’s just say I am still smiling….and I am certain so is he.

Choose a journey that reflects the magnificence of who you are and do not listen to anyone or anything that takes you away from that knowing!

Listen….
