Loss and Possibility: Change the Conversation

d055d972-c740-417a-8a3c-1c82a5d525f8

About a month or so ago my right knee was talking to me so loudly that I sought a medical evaluation. Over the last 6 months there were abundant signs that something was not quite right, however the ever youthful and positive attitude I have about life kept me from putting much importance on a few aches, pain and swelling that came and went.

In December it became very clear that something significant was going on that needed attending to. Thus the primary care doctor, the x-rays, MRI and then Orthopedic Surgeon and Physical Therapist. Now I am “married” to twice weekly physical therapy sessions, exercise and stretching that are literally a part time job!

The cause of all this effort? A torn lateral meniscus and osteoarthritis that has taken up residence in this oft used and important joint.

Beyond the physical findings and implications of this particular situation what I want to explore in this post to all of you is how our conversations – internally and externally – can keep us in loss and victimhood while keeping us stuck or take us into possibility.

A wise indigenous Lakota Sioux once said that the Earth is perfect but we are just having bad conversations. That can be said as well for the conversations we have with ourselves and others when we are experiencing the unending shifts, changes, challenges and crises that affect our daily life moments.

If ego was running the show here is what my conversations might be based in the loss:

I am getting old and am going to just go downhill from here.

What if it gets worse and I can’t walk anymore?

I will just have to live with the pain, discomfort and limitation.

The doctor and physical therapist took away everything that I love to do – walking for exercise, dance, and a great deal of my yoga practice!

I am never going to be the “same” again.

Well you get the picture!

Here are conversations based in possibility arising from simply being with the situation the way it is in the moment:

Yes, my favorite activities have been temporarily halted while I rehabilitate the knee and I will indeed miss them. I am curious about what other activities I can do, or learn to do, while I am going through physical therapy.

I see that through this rehabilitation I will learn a lot more about how my knees function and other factors that led to this break down besides the fact of aging. I am going to do some research.

I bet that I will be stronger and more fit as a result of these efforts. I will rejoin the YMCA to assist with the rehabilitation. That means I can start swimming laps again which I love!

My 50+ and Thriving yoga class at the University of Texas started right after being told of my limitations. Let’s see how I can teach effectively without doing some of the poses and movements I am restricted in right now. I can use someone that has some yoga experience for a demonstration model. I will master my auditory teaching which will allow me to physically assist my students more often. Plus I will gain knowledge about yoga for osteoarthritis and proper alignment of knees in movement.

I am certain you feel the difference energetically in conversations based in loss and those based in possibility. One is remaining in the state of victim and the other is based in taking effective action. This does not mean that there is no place for grieving a loss. That is vitally important to give space for so that opening into possibility can occur. There lies the difference in simply positive thinking, which often disregards the need to grieve.

All of the conversations above based in possibility were actually what transpired for me during this last month. I have learned over the last year or so that taking effective action one step at a time, even when I have never done something, keeps me in a place of being and trusting the unfolding of life moments versus floundering in the rigid conversations of ego based in “certainty”.

Now I can’t say that I didn’t go into the ego/personal conversations above for a few hours after I learned of my diagnosis and temporary limitations, but those conversations felt so contracted in my body and without possibility that they were quickly left behind.

There is no doubt that each of us, our loved ones, as well as our planet will continue to face challenges. I would like to have a bumper sticker that says:

CHANGE THE CONVERSATIONS!

Soul Musings/Day 31: Reflections on Listening to Soul

10268555_10204157249029382_5439799591496993963_n

Gaye Abbott with grandson Lorenzo, Santa Rosa, CA

For those of you that may have been following these Soul Musings for the past 31 days I express my gratitude. In total there have been 93 posts including today’s which is rather unbelievable to me as I was ready to quit it all on Day 5!

True to form there will only be 8 sentences here (though the one following is indeed a very long one!) with the last two being specific to this particular blog. I have experienced many things as I have committed to this practice and among them have been the fickleness of the creative muse; the release in simply writing something and then letting it go; observing the critic that wanted to take main stage but whom I banished to the netherlands (where is that anyway?); the groundedness of a regular writing practice; at times the self-imposed pressure of hitting that “Publish” button every single day on 3 blogs; allowing for the polarity of “good writing” and “bad writing” to vanish from my vocabulary; that there would be “something to write about” every single day, but more, trusting that I would listen to what was coming through and simply act as the translator on behalf of full uncensored expression.

When I was urged from the depths of my Soul – from Source – to commit to this practice I was at first certain of it and then wanted to flee from the implications of it. The months of going without writing anything prior to this practice have now fled into oblivion (would love to know where that is too!) and I am washed clean of any hesitation to simply write from the deepest parts of my being.

Having an abundance of “natural wealth” is about embracing the fullness of who you are in this life you have been given and expressing that true nature out into the world. As our human race shifts from one of fearful consumerism and consumption to interconnected collaboration with compassionate love, and mindful earth based practices from a space of peace, we will realize what true natural wealth is all about.

NAMASTE

Soul Musings/Day 29: Savoring It All

10888371_504796729663617_7558429789327027329_n

Embracing the fullness of life is our innate Natural Wealth.

When I saw this image it made me ponder a bit for we only have right now to live.   It is rather like today is the youngest age we will be for the rest of our life.

We can never know what is going to happen from one moment to the next even if we are a slave to control.  You see real life is uncertain and within that you just have to let go baby and do a whole lot of trusting.

If we could foretell our future and knew that some of the best days of our lives have not happened what would it be like?

Continually in a state of wonder imagining that this breath or the next would be smack in the middle of that next best day or best moment.

Savoring every single morsel of unfolding life no matter how challenging…. for that may turn out down the road to be some of the richest….or the pivotal moment that reveals the Divine …..in you.

Soul Musings is a 31-day practice for the month of December immersed in deep listening to what is emerging and unfolding day by day.  Eight sentences with occasional resources to explore more deeply.

Each post, invited by Soul, allows the words to emerge unscathed from prior planning, editing, or censorship.  Dwelling in uncertainty and dipping a toe into mystery this union of words is an attempt to resonate within an innate way of Being…. returning “home”.

Soul Musings/Day 27: Play Vitality

10846502_834966916560314_2269207103011411818_n

Have you ever noticed people who haven’t lost their delight in pure and simple play?

How old they are seems to recede into the background and who they are in essence strides forward.

That innocent, creative, childlike energy residing in all of us.

Allowing play to emerge cracks open a space of spontaneous open awareness where anything goes…and sometimes does!

A space where the parts we often hide get to, you got it, come out and play!

There is something that happens in this wide open space that leaves us wondering why everything is taken so seriously.

What if play is the catalyst for spiritual awakening….or even wealth.

Would you play more?

Soul Musings/Day 24: Heart Opening

Heart-Opening

The greatest possibilities lay in wait as a human heart is freed to open. Speaking language that is birthed from a clear and open space of stillness – of Being.

A space that speaks not of what we have done, but of who we are in our highest expression. Nor of the accomplishments we have on our resume, but the ways we have made a prayer of listening to another.

Every moment is an opportunity to love if we would just breathe into the possibility of connection. Allowing vulnerability to flourish instead of hiding.

Knowing that in our humanness we have been given a gift beyond imagining.

A gift to give until the end of time….

Soul Musings/Day 19: Seeing With Your Heart

10478229_10152519270735804_509609860531556670_n

From time to time I have pondered what it would be like to be blind. I thought that losing the ability to see with my eyes might rip away a cherished part of being alive for me.

I once attended an evening dinner performance done in total darkness with the guides that lead us into the room, the servers that brought our food, and the musicians that played music to fill our souls – were all blind. Some from birth and others lost along the way in their life journey.

There were many things that stood out for me, but the most important awareness was the intimacy that occurred with the people who were seated at the same table, the collaboration that unfolded, and the intensity of life felt, heard, tasted, touched but not seen.

The fullness of life lived not from visual sight, but instead from all other senses, heightened during the two hours of this experience. Bringing me closer to Being in the all-encompassing moment than I have ever been.

They taught me what “having sight” is all about – seeing from the heart of life….

Soul Musings/Day 17: Natural Intelligence Awakening

282653_10150931996694732_1725221089_n

Our natural intelligence would have us in complete union with nature

Riding the waves of change in conscious rapport

Embracing the space that holds breath

Small daily actions honoring the intricate balance that lives here

Awakening from the darkness that has obscured indigenous wisdom

Remembering that the vibration of all life is ours as well

Here lies the wealth of ages gone and to come

Without resonance we are indeed poor

Soul Musings/Day 10: Transparency

transparent-canoe-kayak

A miracle of clear awareness happened today

Transparency was intuitively partnered with love

This union bringing a deeper connection

With another on the path

Until we both could see clearly through to the depths

Of what holds us back from Being

And intimately links us

To the Source of All….

Soul Musings/Day 8: Promises and Dignity

street post with promises ave and reality way signs

There are actually many parts to a promise though it may seem linear. For today the one aspect that I would like to reflect on is this.

We are human beings that live in an uncertain world with change as the common denominator. That means when we make a promise, or receive a promise from someone, we cannot predict what the future will bring.

In other words, life happens. In the world of human dignity life comes before promises.

Breaking promises” will happen. To treat ourselves and others with dignity as human beings we must remember that we cannot predict the future….and that allowing a space for the action of letting ourselves and others “off the hook” through renegotiation restores dignity.

To Be Or Not To Be….

CanadaGeeseCOPR111905_2228

“Wherever you are no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to your like the wild geese, harsh and exciting – over and over announcing your place in the family of things.”
Mary Oliver

….that is the question!  To be or not to be.  We struggle to know ourselves throughout our lives not realizing that it is a simple task of being present to what is emerging moment to moment within our being.  Not the labels that we have taken on to define us, but instead something much vaster that keeps us yearning for something that seems just out of our reach, yet is right there in our imagination and deeply imprinted in the cells of our body – in our very heart, spirit and soul – coming home to the sacredness of our innate being.

Even for those that don’t get “the lingo” that I just used – you know what I am talking about..  This place of living comes from having engaged the patterns, stories and beliefs that have held us captive within an exterior lived life and that have kept us basing our actions on what is important to those that touch our lives more than what comes from our authentic expression.  At some point in time this engagement has kept us alive and surviving – sometimes quite nicely thank you very much.

Now, what the global shift we are undertaking asks from each of us is to heal and clear away those engagements that no1045166_530216187026429_838979867_n-1 longer serve us and to re-engage from a place of deep authentic awareness of who we are and what type of service we are here to offer.  This is a far cry from what most of us have lived most of our lives.  This wild “soul nature” is directly connected with the natural world.  In fact, we are the natural world. So many have long ago forgotten this and given themselves away to a paradigm of mechanistic thinking that now threatens the very planet that we live upon and has impacted every segment of our society.

For me one of the places that I find this engagement with “soul” is on the ecstatic dance and contact improv dance floor.  Here there is no leader and no follower.  Instead the “dance” is based on what is emerging from and through you in every moment.  There is complete freedom here for one to explore what is yearning to be expressed in a safe, loving and playful environment.  I have always stated “I desire to live my life in the way in which I dance” – free, natural and from a deep soul expression.  Aging has it’s compensations – I am coming closer to this every day!

Another place I find this deep sacred self engagement is within the energy work that I offer to people.  Deep listening, trust, heartfelt engagement and embodiment create the knowing where I am to place my hands next.  The evolutionary component comes into place as I sense and feel the blueprint of the individuals energy system returning home to harmony and wholeness.  This then sparks the transformation of the system to “upgrade”, thus deeply supporting the individuals “coming home to themSelves” in a way that translates into their everyday life.

For the rest of this year I invite each of you to make a real, honest heartfelt invitation to your soul to “turn up the volume” as Sera Beak says in her new book, Red, Hot and Holy: A Heretics Love Story, thus  “becoming more present and active in your awareness, body and ordinary life”.

Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., an internationally recognized stem cell biologist and leader in bridging science and spirituality proposes that Darwinian evolution theories are not holding up to what quantum scientists are now finding.  It is now coming to light that each leap in evolution happened because at some point the membrane of a particular organism was stretched as far as it could go to the point of bursting, thus the evolutionary urge brought the organisms together to form a new collaborative life form to expand the potential of the new organism.  They had to expand their container (or cell membrane) in order to continue to live!

With the advent of internet and other forms of connecting we are now recognizing that the very core of life is deeply interconnected and that the fate of ourselves and the planet depends on collaboration, acceptance and coming together in innovative, compassionate and creative ways. This form of new life depends on each person inhabiting more clearly a rooted sense and embodiment of their purpose here and taking actions from that authentic expression and wild Source.  This translates to expanding our old containers for they have become too small for our being.

As we move into the holidays I extend this invitation to come into them with as much of YOU on board as possible.  By that I mean not succumbing to the mind numbing stress that can happen this time of year and more gracefully relating to family, friends and co-workers from a very grounded and whole sense of yourself.

Our growth and awareness often comes in small increments, but it is in simply saying yes to the sacred journey of life that this expansion becomes rooted.

May your holidays be the best that you have ever experienced!
