Soul Musings/Day 31: Reflections on Listening to Soul

10268555_10204157249029382_5439799591496993963_n

Gaye Abbott with grandson Lorenzo, Santa Rosa, CA

For those of you that may have been following these Soul Musings for the past 31 days I express my gratitude. In total there have been 93 posts including today’s which is rather unbelievable to me as I was ready to quit it all on Day 5!

True to form there will only be 8 sentences here (though the one following is indeed a very long one!) with the last two being specific to this particular blog. I have experienced many things as I have committed to this practice and among them have been the fickleness of the creative muse; the release in simply writing something and then letting it go; observing the critic that wanted to take main stage but whom I banished to the netherlands (where is that anyway?); the groundedness of a regular writing practice; at times the self-imposed pressure of hitting that “Publish” button every single day on 3 blogs; allowing for the polarity of “good writing” and “bad writing” to vanish from my vocabulary; that there would be “something to write about” every single day, but more, trusting that I would listen to what was coming through and simply act as the translator on behalf of full uncensored expression.

When I was urged from the depths of my Soul – from Source – to commit to this practice I was at first certain of it and then wanted to flee from the implications of it. The months of going without writing anything prior to this practice have now fled into oblivion (would love to know where that is too!) and I am washed clean of any hesitation to simply write from the deepest parts of my being.

Having an abundance of “natural wealth” is about embracing the fullness of who you are in this life you have been given and expressing that true nature out into the world. As our human race shifts from one of fearful consumerism and consumption to interconnected collaboration with compassionate love, and mindful earth based practices from a space of peace, we will realize what true natural wealth is all about.

Soul Musings/Day 24: Heart Opening

Heart-Opening

The greatest possibilities lay in wait as a human heart is freed to open. Speaking language that is birthed from a clear and open space of stillness – of Being.

A space that speaks not of what we have done, but of who we are in our highest expression. Nor of the accomplishments we have on our resume, but the ways we have made a prayer of listening to another.

Every moment is an opportunity to love if we would just breathe into the possibility of connection. Allowing vulnerability to flourish instead of hiding.

Knowing that in our humanness we have been given a gift beyond imagining.

A gift to give until the end of time….

Soul Musings/Day 19: Seeing With Your Heart

10478229_10152519270735804_509609860531556670_n

From time to time I have pondered what it would be like to be blind. I thought that losing the ability to see with my eyes might rip away a cherished part of being alive for me.

I once attended an evening dinner performance done in total darkness with the guides that lead us into the room, the servers that brought our food, and the musicians that played music to fill our souls – were all blind. Some from birth and others lost along the way in their life journey.

There were many things that stood out for me, but the most important awareness was the intimacy that occurred with the people who were seated at the same table, the collaboration that unfolded, and the intensity of life felt, heard, tasted, touched but not seen.

The fullness of life lived not from visual sight, but instead from all other senses, heightened during the two hours of this experience. Bringing me closer to Being in the all-encompassing moment than I have ever been.

They taught me what “having sight” is all about – seeing from the heart of life….

Soul Musings/Day 9: Fox Blasts Certainty

How many times have you heard yourself saying, “I know that” or “this is the way it is”? Words that when said together completely close the door to possibility.

In the video above a kind man reflects on how stories and opinions (usually based on what others have said) do not reflect the true and expanded nature of an animal, person, or even a theory or philosophy.

He says about Jack, the fox in this story – “A fox looks like a dog and purrs like a cat, but in fact it is neither.”

He suggests that we need to set aside any pre-conceived notions or opinions and learn about the fox by getting close to it, see how it reacts and observe attitudes. Each and every animal (human) possesses a certain make up that is entirely their own.

Though you may think that this short video is on the story of a fox and the man who rescued him, think again.  Life as it is reveals constant uncertainty and change whether we like it or not….so get on that horse and ride!

Fully Present and Making A Difference!

556959_10151519106855435_1784461972_n

Our journey is all unknown until we find ourselves fully present in the moment of it.  It is at those times that we find a power so deeply embedded within us that it is simply a part of who we are.  However, we often forget this.

Last week an inspiring video came my way that you can access below. It speaks volumes to the creative potential, ingenuity, and passion that arises when each individual brings their uniqueness to the table while supporting the whole.  As the conductor of this very unique orchestra, Luis Szaran declares, “Music is the smile of the soul ….and a bridge between worlds for social transformation.”

As you will see trash becomes music.  Playing melodies made out of trash that moves peoples hearts is a testament to the wise statement above – “You had the power all along…”   Take some time to watch Landfill Harmonic and see where it leads you!

Where There Is Love, There Is Life

480268_602288759787449_466801905_n

Years ago now I was a participant in a week long retreat facilitated by friends where breath, sound therapy and body work were combined to take each individual, and the group as a whole, into very deep states of stillness in the mind and the body.  What transpired there was not merely an experience, but a way of perceiving, and an awareness, that to this day I will never forget.

What I felt near the end of the week was the most astounding awareness.  One that was embodied, not simply known in the mind as a concept. It is difficult to describe in words a knowing that all of us carry inside but constantly forget.   Yet what I will say is that there was no doubt at all that we are simply and absolutely love.  That is the energy that creates us as we are and continues to be the source of our life.

I have been lucky enough to still hold this awareness and way of perceiving within me even though my mind attempts to pull me out constantly.  It is a life long practice to keep going back to the power and awareness of the creative energy and being of love that drives everything around and within us.  We keep forgetting…

Dr. Brian Green, a famous string theory physicist was here in my town of Austin, Texas a couple of weeks ago.  As he talked everyone’s mind was stretched beyond the confines of the everyday reality that we live in on a day to day basis. it struck me that even the incredible creation of and within multiple universes is merely a larger reflection of what is happening – let’s say between two humans.

Through merging, breaking apart, collisions, deterioration and even death there is always a creative force that is underlying all 164427_602274153122243_1970267722_nlife.  The creation fueled by the energy of love.  A force so strong that when accessed can shift individuals, communities, nations, planets,  and even universes.

Ghandi’s statement above has been voiced by many of the leaders and indigenous peoples of our times.   We actually all know this as an absolute truth.  Isn’t it time to bring back the collaboration, cooperation and acknowledgement that all life is created from the creative energy of love….and that without it everything falls apart.  Let’s start now….

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR “OUR DAILY BREATH”!

Richard Cawte

Give Us this Day our Daily Breath is so much more than just a book about breathing. The subtitle of this beautifully-crafted and elegant work sums up its difference from anything else that I have read on the subject: “Weekly Breathing Spaces to Delight, Rest and Reflect In”.

That says it all.

Life has become so hectic for so many of us, with so many things to do every day (and never enough time to do them!). In Give us this Day our Daily Breath, Gaye Abbott gives us a clear, easy-to-follow guide that helps us find places of calmness and deep ease from which the day can emerge in a fresh, vibrant way.

We tend to pay attention to peripheral things in our lives and yet so often the very thing that sustains us – the act of breathing – is something we barely pause to consider. What I love about this book is that it brings the act of breathing to the forefront, allowing the reader to explore his or her relationship with the world through the breath itself. It’s an inspired piece of writing, flowing from the heart.

Giving us weekly practices is a stroke of genius, because it makes it easy for the reader to experiment and adopt new ways of breathing bit-by-bit. That’s why I love the book so much. It’s more than just a book. It’s a road-map to living an in-spired life, a step-by-step manual that invites us to align ourselves with the rhythms of the natural world – and then shows us how.

Life throws up many challenges, but as Gaye says: “the breath is a tool to anchor you. Allow it to be the constant thread around which you weave your life.” Wonderful advice.

Truly a book to read, delight, rest and reflect in!

Give Us this Day our Daily Breath is a wonderful book born from Gaye Abbott’s decades-long practice of yoga, meditation, awareness, mindfulness and joy, celebrating the breath each and every day like the gift and prayer that it is.   Inspirational, creative, healing and practical, Gaye offers insights, exercises and easy-to-follow practices that allow us to fully appreciate and embody this act of breathing and all it contains. Gaye writes, “When we come together with another life form, we share the breath in the air that surrounds us. We take of the same breath, so to speak. Down through the millennia this has continued. In fact, we are breathing and sharing the recycled air of the dinosaurs, the very first humans, the dolphins, and the trees…In many of the classes, workshops and retreats, I often have people sit back to back and feel their own breath first, then connect with the breath rhythm of the other without attempting to change theirs. Almost everyone noticed, in a short period of time, that the breath would synchronize and become one.

Perhaps it was always one to begin with. Through this interconnected basic biological process we can feel each other, and with acute knowing understand what is within the other – even if we do not consciously acknowledge it. What if each one of us joined another – or others – in sharing a peaceful breath rhythm. Would the world change?”

Yes it would, and with Gaye as our guide, it is bound to. And what a joyful and transformational journey it will be. Thank you Gaye for giving us this day our daily breath and reminding us of the incredible beauty, grace and power of this thing called breath that we too often take for granted!

By Nature We Are Generous

As 2012 begins I am struck by the generosity of the natural world and the reflection that it mirrors back at us of our own true and essential nature.  The water flower above radiates an energy that is so perceptible it feels that even if you could not see the flower you could feel it!  The water droplets only add to the magnificence and the depth.  I believe that we are meant to be that generous with our being….. IT FELT LOVE

How did the rose

Ever open its heart

And give to the world

All its Beauty?

It felt the encouragement of light

Against its Being

Otherwise

We all remain

Too Frightened

Making Connections

“My hope and wish is that one day, formal education will pay attention to what I call “education of the heart.” Just as we take for granted the need to acquire proficiency in the basic academic subjects, I am hopeful that a time will come when we can take it for granted that children will learn, as part of the curriculum, the indispensability of inner values: love, compassion, justice, and forgiveness.”  The Dalai Lama

Dear Gaye,

I love the story in your last post. What a great reminder to us all that it’s when we engage with others that real magic happens!

Imagine how different our world would be if the daily news covered tales like this, focusing on the millions of instances of people connecting with each other that happen every day, rather than all the doom and gloom. I really don’t think it would take long for a big shift to happen: a shift from fear to faith.

I’ve just relocated back to England (for a while) and have noticed how wary people are of each other here in comparison to Southern Ireland. Like you, I tend to chat with people, giving them a smile and engaging in whatever topic pops into my head. It always leads somewhere interesting.

The other day I was in a long queue at the post office. In front of me was a young mother with her small boy, of maybe 6 or 7 years old. Hanging around in queues is deadly dull for small children (I remember it well!) and he was getting bored, singing “Let it snow!” louder and louder to get attention. I bent down and started chatting with him. Do you think it’ll snow this Christmas? Yes, I hope so: that sort of thing.

Then I realized that his Mom was looking at me with alarm. Her eyes said: “Who is this strange man? Why is he talking with my son? What does he want?” I looked her right in the eye and simply said “It’s ok, I have three kids of my own,” at which point she softened and we carried on chatting, all three of us, whilst the queue got shorter. We didn’t have the spectacular results that you and your artist friend did, but a moment of fear was transformed into a few minutes of connection.

And that, to me, is what this time in our evolution is all about: transforming fear of difference into moments of connection. Yes, we’re all unique, but we’re all pretty much the same underneath, with 99.99% of our genome being shared by each one of us across the globe.

By nature, we are all one. And we know it. Put a group of two year olds in a room and leave them to it and they get on just fine, no matter what color, creed or social background they’re from. We’re genetically predisposed to connect.

It’s only later, when we go to school and start to listen to what our friends and parents tell us, that we start to see others as different. They myth of separation begins to kick in and pretty soon we start making judgements that set “us” aside from “them”. And that’s where the problems come in. Squabbles over differences lead to arguments on a minor scale, wars on a major one.

We’re heading towards Christmas, a time when we direct our attention towards giving and sharing, when we’re encouraged to display our innate sense of empathy. I wonder, though, whether each of us can make a commitment to bringing that sense of empathy into every day of our lives, sharing a smile, offering help whenever we can, doing what we can to bridge the perceived divides?

I think we can. It doesn’t have to be in huge, grand gestures (although those are just fine too!). We can all do a little bit, each day. And each little bit mounts up. And the shift begins.

For me, there’s no such thing as separation. What I feel, you feel. What happens to animals, plants, to the earth itself, happens to me too. That’s the beauty of it. We’re all in this together.

Namaste,

Richard.

Resistance is Futile and A Doorway to Freedom

Dear Richard –

Certainly “resistance is futile”, and a doorway to freedom at the same time.  Freedom of accepting ourselves just as we are when we finally let go of that end of the rope we have been tugging on so strongly.  Yes, at times we do win the tug-of-war (notice what that implies) , but I question at what cost??

Do we push and pull our way through our lives, or do we live them with self compassion and open our hearts to being the presence and power of love that we are?  This latter does indeed involve releasing attachment, and sometimes you might be surprised at exactly what you are attached to!

I found this to be true only a few days ago.  A very dear friend of mine wanted to practice a process with prospective coaching clients that she calls Discovery.  In that elegant process I was led by direct questions to view my life from a place of attachment to what I “wanted to see happen”, and move into a place of non-attachment to  “all that is possible”.

Let’s just say there was a very large crevasse between the two of them. On one side of the great divide was my small attached ego,  and on the other side was that larger self that has been oh so patiently awaiting the nod of my head to come out and really play.  A self that lives in a much larger container – no container at all actually.  Are you getting a visual image of the two sides here?  Well, I am and it is quite entertaining!

At one point in this discovery session my friend asked me to imagine what qualities this fuller self (the real me) felt, looked and sounded like.  As she presented this question I felt my breath expand, my spine lengthen, a smile broke out, arms went up in the air with palms upwards, and my body started moving in delightful ways.  I saw colors and sparks of light and felt energy moving throughout my body.  A sound of celebration escaped without any resistance to holding it back.  In fact, I was radiating such a wide and bright light that I almost had to put sun glasses on!

Within this process of embodying and recapturing the essence of who I am a question was asked by my friend.  What is stopping you from Being this in your present life?  The first thing that arose came with a huge impact.  My mind, viewing all of this larger self “nonsense” said, “Once you have created the streams of money that you want and need to support activating all that you feel is your purpose in life, then you have the freedom to be fully yourself”.

Well, you can imagine what that essential nature self felt on the other side of the divide.  She is not so highly evolved that an expletive doesn’t escape from her mouth from time to time…and one did in this moment. (Silently though so my friend did not hear it )  As this fully embodied bright self let go of her end of the rope from the small ego’s grasp she said, “all streams, whether money or other forms, will never flow easily into your life as long as you are holding back on your true nature”.

This is the surprise I was referring to earlier.  I had no idea that I was attached to the belief that I needed to “do something” in order to have the flow of wealth in all areas of my life.  Action is important, but in that moment I knew without any doubt that it is not only about taking action from the heart, but just as importantly from the fullest expression of yourself in any one moment.    So, in other words no holding back – AT ALL!!

As my friend asked me for feedback on the session I was still smiling and incredibly grateful for the awareness of this stuck belief (resistance) that was holding me back.  It made me remember a quote by Marianne Williamson:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

A recognition that the small ego within us resides in a contracted and fear based place was not new to me.  What was new is that I had this belief entrenched within me in the first place.  So dear friend Richard, I am now letting go of the end of the rope and am completely willing to dive into the waters (and fire!) of simply being fully who I am in as many moments as possible.  You may see a very bright light across the Atlantic ocean…and if you do, know that it is me.

With Love From A
Gaye
