Fundamentals For Changing The World
Moving into 2014 I thought it relevant to bring some thoughts on how each of us might participate in our lives in a way that enhances our expression from wholeness. Something that is now vitally important to the changing world that we inhabit.
The fundamentals below could also be said to be relevant for exposing and evolving our unique expression without fear in each moment of this gift of life we have been given. For what is life if not the most precious gift possible that needs to be shared fully and extravagantly with the world in service and love.
My comments are below the quotes from Gandhi.
Gandhi’s Top 10 Fundamentals for Changing the World:
“You must be the change you want to see in the world.”
“As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world – that is the myth of the atomic age – as in being able to remake ourselves.”
As our planet and systems evolve and shift to a healthier way of being the most important element in that change is the invitation you extend to yourself to deepen into the heart of living – to fully express your life from a place of transparency and vulnerability. Your soul is beckoning you to come out. Listen, move beyond the fear, accept the constant inevitable change, and come out dancing with your own unique being!
“Nobody can hurt me without my permission.”
Essentially their is no control in this life as everything is always changing. We only assume we do have control out of a sense of protection and fear. What if we became a collaborative culture listening to and respecting others ideas and creativity, and discarded control as a reflection of our own low self worth and distrust of a moving Universe that has a wisdom way beyond what we can even comprehend?
“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”
“An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind.”
A powerful example of this is shown in the restorative justice movement which is currently sweeping the world. It is a means – a way – to go to the very source of violence and desperation and bring healing through exposure and forgiveness. South Africa gave us a beautiful model and now we are realizing that when perpetrator and victim can come together and deeply forgive themselves and each other that the cycle of violence is broken. That is strength!
“An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching.”
How often have you come in contact with those that speak a volume of words but either do not take action, or live a life completely different from what they have been preaching? Taking action from values and heart felt practices of living consciously and compassionately is what it will take to change the world.
5. The present moment.
“I do not want to foresee the future. I am concerned with taking care of the present. God has given me no control over the moment following.”
Living in the past or projecting what will happen in the future only takes us out of the moment we are in. The present moment is all that we have – one breath in and one breath out at a time. Shall we miss the passage of our life all together or shall we make each moment count?!
6. Everyone is human.
“I claim to be a simple individual liable to err like any other fellow mortal. I own, however, that I have humility enough to confess my errors and to retrace my steps.”
“It is unwise to be too sure of one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.”
This is called transparency. To know that we are human and that we will make mistakes and hurt people – not out of malice or forethought, but out of being human. As each of us relates from a place of deep understanding, compassion and kindness we inspire each other to come out of hiding and present ourselves “naked” to the world. If everyone is doing this then we shall see how much we are really all the same….
“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”
Staying true to your path and purpose with some changes in course from time to time – one must be resilient – is perhaps one of the most exhilarating, at times frustrating and challenging things to do. However, what do all of the great positive change makers have in common – they persist! By the way, don’t forget to ask for support from time to time. This is the era for connection, collaboration and co-creation!!
“I look only to the good qualities of men. Not being faultless myself, I won’t presume to probe into the faults of others.”
“I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.”
When we put our attention on the good in life that is what we see and experience. When we put our attention on the good in people they seem to relate to us from the place where we have placed our attention. What could be simpler?!
“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”
“Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.”
Mindfulness in all that we do contributes to living in truth – truth of the moment and the truth of what we feel and express in each of those moments. It may be challenging to cozy up with truth at times, but the alternative is to live our precious lives in a flurry of self inflicted lies and assumptions. Whenever your mind makes an assumption or tells you a story ask the question – Is this true? Bet it won’t be most of the time!
“Constant development is the law of life, and a man who always tries to maintain his dogmas in order to appear consistent drives himself into a false position.”
Once again we come back to the truth that everything changes. There is nothing – I repeat nothing – in this world that ever stays the same. That includes everything. So why hang on to old stories, philosophies and rigid rules when you could have such a grand time co-creating a new world one new development at a time….and then like a child’s building blocks let them all fall down and start over again. It is in the very act of creation where lies the spark of life…
